WORKS Minister\u00a0Desmond Bannister said yesterday the former administration issued $200m worth of contracts without going through bidding, as he announced that there will be changes to the tender and bidding\u00a0processes at the Ministry of Works.<\/p>\n

Mr Bannister said the key changes, once implemented, would\u00a0mandate that all contracts being financed by the government go to a tender process.<\/p>\n

The comments came in an interview with reporters\u00a0before yesterday morning\u2019s Cabinet meeting.<\/p>\n

The Carmichael MP said the move would\u00a0ensure\u00a0transparency and value for the Bahamian people.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are working at changing (the process),\u201d he said. \u201cUnder the former administration, they had $200m in negotiated contracts that were just negotiated out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Bannister added: \u201cThere was no process whereby persons could come in and bid on contracts. They were simply negotiated to, I guess, the political supporters\u2026.. that\u2019s over $200 million.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are seeking to change that process so that the process is more transparent and the process endures to the benefit of Bahamians.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked yesterday what\u00a0guidelines\u00a0he felt needed\u00a0to be\u00a0implemented as a part of the changes, Mr Bannister added: \u201cI think when we change that process, you are going to see lots of things happening.<\/p>\n
