{"id":7882,"date":"2019-01-11T07:39:11","date_gmt":"2019-01-11T12:39:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/projectcalls.com\/dev?p=7882"},"modified":"2019-01-09T12:40:50","modified_gmt":"2019-01-09T17:40:50","slug":"cruise-petitioners-seek-assurances-from-governor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/projectcalls.com\/dev\/cruise-petitioners-seek-assurances-from-governor\/","title":{"rendered":"Cruise petitioners seek assurances from governor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Campaigners collecting signatures for a petition to force a people-initiated referendum on the controversial cruise port project met with the governor Friday as they continued their push for Cayman Islands voters to decide the issue.<\/p>\n<p>The group, Cruise Port Referendum Cayman, says it is getting close to the target of 5,288 signatures \u2013 representing 25 percent of the electorate \u2013 required to trigger a public vote on the port.<\/p>\n<p>Amid news that government has already agreed to a contract with two major cruise lines to help finance the project, the group was seeking assurances that the governor\u2019s office would help ensure the constitutional requirement for a referendum is upheld if and when the petition hits its target.<\/p>\n<p>In a brief press release about the meeting, CPR Cayman stated, \u201cThe group raised concerns that included the government\u2019s overall lack of transparency, the significant environmental impacts to the marine environment, and the financial implications of Cayman\u2019s most expensive and complex capital works project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe group also sought assurances that the Governor\u2019s Office, with constitutional oversight for good governance and security, would ensure that the constitutional rights of the Caymanian people would be upheld when the petition signed by 25 percent of registered voters is presented to the government, in accordance with Section 70 of the Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Governor\u2019s Office confirmed the meeting had taken place, but there was no indication from either party that the governor would intervene in the issue in any way. He has previously said that the cruise port is a matter for Cayman\u2019s elected government.<\/p>\n<p>In an emailed statement released in response to questions from the Cayman Compass, the Governor\u2019s Office wrote, \u201cThe discussions were constructive and informative.
